What Is NARA and Why It Matters

The Nebraska Accountability & Rights Alliance (NARA) is a Nebraska-based advocacy organization dedicated to protecting public safety, preserving access to the courts, and defending the right to a fair trial. In plain terms, NARA exists to make sure that when someone is harmed by negligence or misconduct, the responsibility for that harm falls on the party who caused it—not on injured families, local businesses, hospitals, or taxpayers.

Civil justice laws are not just about lawsuits. They are one of the primary ways our society encourages safe behavior, honest business practices, and personal responsibility. When companies, property owners, or individuals know they can be held accountable for preventable harm, they have a strong incentive to act carefully and invest in safety. When those accountability mechanisms are weakened, the costs of injury do not disappear—they are simply shifted to others through higher insurance premiums, unpaid medical bills, lost productivity, and public assistance programs.

NARA focuses on educating policymakers and the public about these real-world consequences. Too often, debates about “tort reform” are framed as abstract discussions about lawsuits or legal technicalities. In reality, changes to civil justice laws affect everyday Nebraskans, whether they are drivers on the road, customers in a store, employees at work, or small business owners trying to compete fairly. NARA works to bring clarity, facts, and real-life impact into those conversations.

A core part of NARA’s mission is defending the right to trial. Jury trials are a constitutional safeguard that allow ordinary citizens to resolve disputes fairly and transparently. Policies that cap damages, limit claims, or block cases from reaching a jury can deny people their day in court and remove an important check on unsafe or irresponsible behavior. NARA believes decisions about accountability should be made based on evidence and fairness, not arbitrary limits or blanket rules.

NARA is important because it represents a broad public interest. Its supporters include concerned citizens, community leaders, professionals, and families who understand that accountability and safety benefit everyone. By engaging in legislative advocacy, public education, and coalition-building, NARA helps ensure that Nebraska’s laws continue to reflect fairness, responsibility, and common sense.

In short, NARA works to keep Nebraska’s civil justice system balanced—protecting people’s rights, encouraging responsible conduct, and preventing the costs of harm from being unfairly shifted onto the public.
